To an old curmudgeon like me, Dusty Baker is my new hero.
As fall is upon us (I haven’t had to run my AC for three days now), and the World Series is over, I thought it would be time to put out our EOY accounting.
Let me add my congratulations to Glenn, Dennis and Craig, as well as Weve and Vern, for a real nail-biting race to the finish. I also want to extend congratulation to the Rons, who made it in the money and made it very worrisome to myself and Fraser down the stretch.
In the tables below, you will see the entire amount of money spent during the course of the season which contributed to the prize pool and the payouts to the winning teams. There is also a table showing the teams that had positive balances at the end of the season which will carry over into next season. The line “Total in account” was before any winnings were disbursed. Then there are two tables at the bottom which include winnings left in the pool by the winners, and off-season balances, which is comprised of the “balances” and “money left” tables. Finally, there is a line for Glenn’s benefit of the total that should be in the account after the winning checks were sent. The amount should actually be a little larger because of interest on the account, but, as per our usual rules, Glenn is entitled to that since he has to pay taxes on it.

Before I go, there is one thing I noticed while watching games this season. I know MLB has, for many years now, thrown out balls that are bounced in on the pitch or fouled of in the dirt. But I noticed an oddity several times this season. Why is it necessary, when a ball is softly bunted on the infield grass and dribbles across the baseline, for the ball to be thrown out of play while a ball that is scalded to short on one hop is tossed back to the pitcher and left in play?
